I see people showing their hate for AI and I get it.
I’m also not in favour of “humans losing to AI” and I don’t think it will become true either.
We as humans will learn to do things that AI won’t be able to do easily. And to be honest, we should.
But if AI can help us work faster and better, then why is that a problem?
Isn’t AI also technology? And aren’t we using technology in our lives?
Yes. I agree that AI shouldn’t be used for evil things. And I also agree that AI should be used for human prosperity.
But if we hate technology that much then why are we using it in the first place?
Imagine AI helps you in writing. Or it can help you research X times faster.
To me, this seems more like a win for humans.
And there are a bunch of AI tools that can help us in many ways. Perplexity is one of them.
I’m not sure if you’ve used Perplexity yet.
But if you love to have more free time by doing your work better and faster, then here are 3 use cases that Perplexity has:
(And probably very few people have talked about them)
1: Use the Reddit function to research content ideas
Writing content is one thing. And writing content that readers will read is something else.
We often write what we want others to read and we finally end up the only ones reading it.
It’s because what we think others will read is different than what others want to read.
So instead of guessing, try to find out what people prefer to read.
You can do this by finding out what people ask about.
Platforms like Quora and Reddit are at the forefront of public questions.
Now it gets harder to check for every question one by one. And that’s where Perplexity comes in handy.
Using a single prompt in perplexity can help extract many of the questions from Reddit that people ask about a specific topic.
This will help in writing that resonates with your readers.
To do that, Open Perplexity. It’s all free. You just have to create an account.
In the prompt bar, click on the “Focus” key.
From the box that opens, choose “Reddit”.
Then in the prompt bar, ask whatever you want to know.
For example, use a prompt like this: “What are the most common problems people have when writing a copy?”
Now have a look at the result.
The best thing about this feature is that it directly researches Reddit and brings up a very juicy output.
Why Juicy?
Because it has a reference to each question. It helps you research that specific question even more.
Now these are all the questions asked by other people. Answer them in your writing and many people will find it useful.
Wait! What Perplexity offers next is even better.
2: Summarize any link (even hotlinks)
Yes. Other AI tools can also read external links.
I’ve used ChatGPT to read external links. But it stops working at some point and gives me a hard time.
Perplexity takes it a bit too far. It works better with any kind of link, even those hotlinks.
Here, I asked about a photo inside a website by copying the image address.
Then, I used the prompt below, put the link with it, and clicked enter.
“Analyze the photo in this link and tell me who you see.”
Now have a look at the output.
It’s all perfect. It explained very well what it sees in the photo. The person, the background information and all.
It’s a bit more accurate than many LLMs.
It’s mainly because Perplexity is built as an AI search engine.
And let me ask you this. Did you know that you can build custom GPTs in Perplexity?
3: Collection (The GPTs of Perplexity)
Truth be told, Collections are not exactly like GPTs. But they can do most of the job. Plus they’re 100% free.
The good thing about them is that they can be trained as you want.
It helps in generating a customized response.
So to set it up, simply click on Collection at the top of the tab.
In the Choose Collection tab, click on New Collection.
A new tab will open where you can give it a name, set an emoji avatar, and provide all the instructions in the AI Prompt box.
It mostly works like GPTs. You just set some rules and instructions and that’s it.
You can even set the privacy on whether to make it private to you or public for anyone with the link.
After all the instructions including everything are set up, it’s time to try it out.
(Check out the instructions in the screenshot above)
Ready? Let’s go.
I used a simple prompt.
“Write a linkedin post about why some writers fail as beginners”
Yeah with all the instructions you’ll put, it should act on them. So let’s see what happens here.
Here you go!
The output is satisfactory. The lines’ length, the formatting, and the usage of the words.
Think about this. With a little tweak, you can use it as a LinkedIn post.
And yeah. There are things lacking and it’s not a human.
But it served our demand. It helped us create a custom GPT for free.
And I know that GPTs of ChatGPT are now accessible to free users too. But unless you’re a plus user, you cannot create them.
Imagine Collections. They are 100% free to create. And you’re all good with using them.
PS. I was really stuck in life and a few screenshots weren’t yet ready. So accept this late email and from next week, you’ll receive your email on Tuesday again.
And by the way, once you try any of these let me know how you like it.
You can always comment or send me a message. I would love to help.
Have a great Wednesday.
Sami
Sami, I read your article twice, then lost track of it.
I just read it again and went over and used perplexity for my topic, inner personal work, damn, dude.
This thing is a game changer for research and writing inspiration. The fact the results will show you the reddit comments is incredible.
Right on and thank you. subscribed. 👍
Hey Sami, I never heard of perplexity before, but you made me want to check it out! As a writer, I’ve always struggled with market research because it was hard for me to aggregate all the answers and deduce a solution. Thank you for posting this! Your newsletter is awesome by the way! Just subscribed!
